Water hardness measures how much dissolved calcium and magnesium is in your water supply. The higher the concentration, the harder the water. If you’re seeing white crusty buildup on faucets, a filmy residue on dishes, or your soap barely lathers, you’ve probably got hard water.
What “Hard Water” Actually Means
Hardness is measured in grains per gallon (GPG) or parts per million (PPM). One grain per gallon equals about 17.1 PPM. The general scale looks like this:
- Soft: 0–1 GPG (0–17 PPM)
- Slightly hard: 1–3.5 GPG (17–60 PPM)
- Moderately hard: 3.5–7 GPG (60–120 PPM)
- Hard: 7–10.5 GPG (120–180 PPM)
- Very hard: Over 10.5 GPG (180+ PPM)
Water hardness varies widely across the Bay Area depending on your city and water source. San Francisco draws from surface reservoirs and tends to be soft to slightly soft. East Bay cities are typically slightly hard. Parts of Santa Clara and San Jose that rely on groundwater can run very hard, above 10 GPG. Your city’s annual water quality report (required by law and published on your utility’s website) is the fastest free answer before you run any test.
The minerals themselves aren’t a health hazard. The problem is what they leave behind: scale deposits inside pipes and water heaters that reduce flow, cut heating efficiency, and shorten appliance life over time.
How to Test It at Home
Test strips are the simplest option. You dip a strip in tap water, wait the specified seconds, and match the color to a chart. They run a few dollars at hardware stores or online. They won’t give you laboratory precision, but they’ll show if your water is soft, moderate, or hard, which is enough to decide whether to take the next step.
Liquid test kits work similarly and sometimes give a slightly more granular result. Same principle: add drops to a water sample, compare color.
Mail-in lab tests are worth doing if you’re on a private well or if you want a full panel (hardness plus pH, chlorine, nitrates, bacteria). You collect a sample in the provided vial, mail it in, and get a report back in a few days. Basic panels typically start around $40–$100; comprehensive panels that include bacteria, metals, and other contaminants run higher. Confirm current pricing directly with the lab before ordering.
The soap test is not precise but gives a rough idea. Fill a clear bottle one-third full with tap water, add ten drops of pure liquid castile soap (not dish detergent or any soap with synthetic surfactants, which lather regardless of water hardness), cap it, and shake hard for about ten seconds. If you get a lot of fluffy lather that holds, your water is likely soft. If the water looks milky or cloudy with little foam, it’s probably hard. Treat this as a signal, not a measurement.
For most homeowners who already suspect a problem, a $5 test strip kit is the right starting point.
Reading the Numbers and Deciding What to Do
Under 3.5 GPG, most people won’t notice any issues and no treatment is typically needed.
Between 3.5 and 7 GPG, you’ll see some spotting on glassware and minor buildup on fixtures. This is the range where many people start considering a water softener, though it’s not urgent.
Above 7 GPG is where scale starts causing real damage over time. Water heater efficiency drops, dishwasher and washing machine parts wear faster, and showerheads clog. At this level it’s worth at least having a conversation with a licensed plumber about softening options.
Above 10.5 GPG, scale buildup is aggressive. If you’re on a private well and getting numbers this high, a treatment solution isn’t optional anymore.
What Causes Hard Water
All hardness comes from the same basic source: groundwater or surface water that has passed through limestone, chalk, or gypsum formations, picking up calcium and magnesium along the way. Municipal water treatment removes some of it, but not all. Wells draw directly from groundwater and often have higher hardness.
There’s no malfunction causing it. It’s geology. That’s why treatment happens at the point of use, not at the source.
What a Plumber Actually Does
A licensed plumber who handles water treatment will typically run their own water test (more detailed than a strip) and check your existing plumbing before recommending anything. They’ll look at pipe material, water heater age, existing softener if you have one, and your household water usage to size a softener correctly.
Sizing matters. An undersized unit won’t keep up with demand. An oversized one wastes salt and water through unnecessary regeneration cycles. Getting that math right requires knowing your actual hardness number and your household’s daily water use.
When to Call a Licensed Plumber
In California, water softener installation requires a permit and must be performed or certified by a licensed contractor with a C-55 (water conditioning) or C-36 (plumbing) license. It involves cutting into the main supply line, installing bypass valves, connecting a drain line, and setting regeneration cycles. This is not a DIY job you can do legally without those credentials, and doing it incorrectly can create backflow issues or void appliance warranties.
Call a licensed plumber if:
- Your test strip shows water above 7 GPG and you want to do something about it
- You’re on a well and haven’t had your water tested in more than a year
- You’re seeing significant scale buildup inside your water heater or you’ve noticed a drop in hot water efficiency
- You want a whole-house softener or any whole-house filtration system installed
- You already have a softener and it doesn’t seem to be working (wrong salt type, resin fouled, programming off)
