That banging or thudding noise you hear when a washing machine valve snaps shut, or when you turn off a faucet quickly, is almost certainly water hammer. It’s a pressure shockwave traveling through your pipes, and while it sounds alarming, whether it’s harmless or a real problem depends on how often it happens and what your water pressure looks like.
What’s Actually Happening Inside the Pipe
Water moving through a pipe has momentum. When a valve closes suddenly, a solenoid valve in a washing machine, a dishwasher fill valve, a fast-closing ball valve, that column of moving water has nowhere to go. The pressure spikes sharply at the closed end, then bounces back. That’s the bang you hear.
The physics name for it is hydraulic shock. The pressure spike can be several times your normal line pressure, just for a fraction of a second. In a well-maintained system with normal water pressure (roughly 40-80 psi), the pipe fittings can absorb this repeatedly for years without issue. The problem is when the spikes happen constantly, or when your line pressure is already running high.
The Most Common Causes, in Order of Likelihood
Fast-closing valves. Modern washing machines, dishwashers, and some ice makers use solenoid valves that slam shut almost instantly. Older homes weren’t plumbed with that in mind. This is the number one cause of water hammer in residential plumbing today.
High water pressure. If your home’s pressure runs above 80 psi, every hydraulic shock is amplified. A pressure-reducing valve (PRV) that’s worn out or set too high is a frequent culprit. You can check your pressure with an inexpensive gauge threaded onto a hose bib.
Loose pipes. Pipes that aren’t properly secured to joists or framing will physically move when the shockwave hits. You’ll hear a bang plus sometimes a secondary rattle or clank. The bang is the pressure spike; the rattle is the pipe slapping against something.
Waterlogged air chambers. Older homes sometimes have vertical pipe stubs behind walls, called air chambers, that were installed specifically to cushion water hammer. Over time these fill with water and lose their cushioning effect. When that happens, hammer that was once suppressed comes back.
How a Plumber Diagnoses It
A licensed plumber will start by measuring your static water pressure at a hose bib. If it’s over 80 psi, that’s the first thing to address. They’ll also ask which fixtures trigger the noise, washing machine only or multiple locations, and whether the problem is new or has been there for years.
From there they’ll check whether you already have water hammer arrestors installed on the supply lines feeding appliances with fast-closing valves. Arrestors are small devices with a sealed air chamber and a piston; they absorb the shockwave. They’re installed on the hot and cold supply lines close to the appliance, and they don’t require draining the system.
If pipes are banging inside walls, the plumber will want to know whether they’re properly strapped. Unsecured pipes in crawl spaces or basements are easy to address. Pipes inside finished walls are a bigger job.
One Thing You Can Check Yourself
Checking your water pressure is straightforward. Thread a pressure gauge onto an outdoor hose bib (they cost around $10-15 at any hardware store) and read the static pressure with no water running anywhere in the house. Write the number down before you call a plumber. Anything above 80 psi confirms a PRV issue worth addressing.
That’s the practical limit of DIY here. The actual fixes, installing arrestors, adjusting or replacing a PRV, strapping loose pipes, all involve the water supply lines and are better handled by someone licensed to do the work.
PRV Issues: Adjustment and Replacement
Both adjusting and replacing a PRV are jobs for a licensed plumber. An incorrect adjustment can let pressure creep back up or swing too low, trading one problem for another. Replacement means shutting off water at the meter and working on the main supply line. If your pressure gauge reading comes back high, share that number when you call. It gives the plumber a clear starting point and avoids guesswork on the visit.
When Hammer Signals a Bigger Problem
If you’re hearing hammer in multiple locations, or if you’re seeing small leaks at soldered fittings near where the noise is loudest, don’t wait. Repeated hydraulic shock does stress joints over time. It won’t necessarily crack a pipe overnight, but a fitting that’s been hammered for years on a high-pressure system is a future leak waiting to happen.
Pipes banging inside walls that you can’t access also need a pro to evaluate. A plumber can sometimes add strapping through access panels or crawl spaces without opening drywall, but they need to see what they’re working with.
When to Call a Licensed Plumber
Call a licensed plumber if:
- Your static water pressure reads above 80 psi
- You’ve had arrestors installed and still hear banging
- You’re seeing any moisture or drips near noisy sections of pipe
- The noise started suddenly after years of silence (sometimes signals a failed PRV or a new appliance with an aggressive valve)
- Pipes are clanking inside finished walls
