Bubbling paint, a soft spot on the drywall, or a musty smell that won’t go away can mean water is somewhere it shouldn’t be. Each symptom points to a different cause and a different level of urgency. Here’s how to read them.
Bubbling or Peeling Paint
Paint bubbles when moisture gets trapped beneath the surface. If the bubble is dry and the wall feels solid, you’re probably looking at old damage that already dried out, maybe from a leak that was fixed months ago, or a one-time splash that soaked in and evaporated. Press the bubble gently. If it’s soft or weeps moisture, the source is still active.
The most common culprits are a slow supply line drip behind the wall, condensation on cold pipes running through an uninsulated cavity, or a pinhole in copper pipe from corrosion. Galvanized steel pipes, common in homes built before the mid-1980s, corrode from the inside and can develop small leaks years before they fail completely.
Discoloration and Staining
Yellow-brown water stains follow a path. A stain low on the wall usually means the leak is roughly at that height or just above it. A stain near the ceiling on an interior wall often traces back to a drain line from the floor above, not a roof issue. That’s a common misread.
A ring stain (darker at the edge, lighter in the center) is a drying pattern. It means water got in, spread out, and evaporated, leaving minerals behind. It doesn’t tell you whether it’s still active. You need to monitor it: mark the outer edge with a pencil and date it. If the ring grows in a week, the source is active.
Soft, Warped, or Spongy Drywall
This is the most reliable sign of sustained moisture. Drywall is gypsum sandwiched in paper. Once the paper and gypsum absorb enough water, the board swells, delaminates, and starts to crumble. If you press on a wall and it gives slightly, or if you see the surface paper starting to separate, that section has been wet for a while.
Warped baseboards tell a similar story. Wood swells and warps with moisture. Baseboards that have pulled away from the wall or that show a gap at the floor are absorbing water from the bottom up, which usually means either a slab leak below the floor or water wicking up from a persistent wet spot nearby.
Musty Smell Without Visible Mold
Mold can grow inside a wall cavity before you ever see it on the surface. The musty odor comes from microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs), the metabolic byproduct of mold breaking down wet organic material. You can have significant mold growth on the back side of drywall while the visible surface still looks fine.
If a room smells musty and you can’t find an obvious source, don’t just air it out and move on. That smell means there’s enough sustained moisture in there for biology to happen, and that doesn’t fix itself.
Mold Spots on the Surface
Visible mold, black, green, or gray spots, sometimes fuzzy, means conditions have been wet long enough for a colony to grow through to the painted surface. Mold can begin colonizing the back side of drywall and wood framing within 24 to 48 hours of sustained moisture. Breaking through to the painted surface and becoming visible typically takes weeks of persistent moisture. By the time you can see mold on painted drywall, there’s almost certainly more on the paper backing and in the cavity behind it.
Small mold patches on grout or caulk in a bathroom are a different situation and often just a surface cleaning issue. Mold spreading across drywall or appearing in rooms that aren’t bathrooms is a different matter entirely.
How a Plumber Actually Finds the Source
A licensed plumber has tools you don’t. They’ll inspect all accessible plumbing (under sinks, in the crawl space, at the water heater) for signs of moisture. For leaks inside walls, they may use a moisture meter, which reads moisture content in drywall without cutting. Thermal imaging shows temperature differences where a cold pipe is sweating or where wet insulation is holding cooler temperatures. Pressure testing, where the system is isolated and monitored for pressure drop, can confirm an active leak even when you can’t see one.
The goal is to find the source before opening the wall, so you’re not cutting in the wrong place. Diagnostic work up front saves drywall repair later.
What You Can Safely Do Before Calling
A few things are reasonable to do yourself while you wait for a plumber.
Check your water meter. Turn off every fixture in the house, then watch the meter for fifteen minutes. If the needle or leak indicator moves, you have an active leak somewhere in the system. This doesn’t locate it, but it confirms you have one.
Check under all sinks, behind the toilet, and at the washing machine connections. Supply line failures at fixtures are common and sometimes the “mystery leak inside the wall” is actually just water running down from a fitting you can see.
Take photos and note where symptoms are. A plumber will want to know what you found, where it is, and how long it’s been there.
Don’t open the wall yourself to investigate. If there’s mold behind it, you can spread spores into the living space. If there’s an active leak, you may not be able to reseal it. And you may not cut in the right place anyway.
When to Call a Licensed Plumber
Any active moisture, soft drywall, mold growth inside a wall, or a stain that’s spreading warrants a call to a licensed plumber. Don’t wait to see if it gets worse. Water damage escalates fast once wood framing starts absorbing moisture, and structural repairs cost far more than plumbing repairs.
