Sewer Camera Inspection: What It Shows and When You Should Get One

A sewer camera inspection feeds a waterproof camera through your drain line to show root intrusion, cracks, offset joints, bellies, and pipe material from the inside. Here's what the footage actually reveals and when it's worth getting one.

A sewer camera inspection is exactly what it sounds like: a plumber feeds a waterproof camera on a flexible cable through your drain line and watches live video of the pipe interior. It takes around 30 to 60 minutes in most houses, and it’s the only reliable way to know what’s actually happening inside a buried pipe without digging. If someone quoted you a repair and you want to understand what they found, this is how to read the results.

What the Camera Actually Shows

The inspector watches the footage in real time and logs problem locations by distance from the cleanout. Here’s what shows up most often, roughly in order of how common it is:

Root intrusion. Tree and shrub roots find their way through joints and cracks in older clay or cast iron pipe. On camera they look like a fuzzy mass of white or tan strands, sometimes wispy and hair-like at a joint, sometimes a dense ball that fills the pipe. The camera can push through minor root clusters but usually stops at a severe blockage. Roots don’t fix themselves. They grow back after cutting unless the underlying crack or joint gap is addressed.

Grease and scale buildup. In kitchen lines this is one of the most common findings. The pipe opening narrows from a full circle to a rough, irregular channel. It’s not a dramatic failure, but a heavily grease-coated line drains slowly and catches solids. Hot water and enzymes help with maintenance; heavy buildup usually needs hydro-jetting by a licensed plumber.

Offset joints. Clay tile sewer pipe from roughly the early 1900s through the early 1980s was installed in short sections with bell-and-spigot joints. Ground movement, settling, or tree roots can push one section sideways relative to the next. On camera you see the pipe floor suddenly rise or shift and the next section is no longer aligned. Mild offsets catch toilet paper and debris over time. Severe offsets can block flow entirely or let groundwater in.

Belly (sag). A section of pipe that has settled below grade holds standing water rather than draining toward the main. The camera reaches a low spot where water is pooled and you can’t see the bottom of the pipe. Bellies promote sediment buildup and, over years, blockages. Repair typically means excavation or trenchless pipe lining, depending on severity. Either way, it’s a job for a licensed plumber.

Cracks and fractures. These range from hairline cracks (often not an emergency but worth monitoring) to full breaks where you can see surrounding soil. A camera tells you the location and severity. A crack in a plastic or PVC line from a recent ground shift is different from a crack in corroded 1920s cast iron.

Pipe material identification. The camera also tells you what you have: orangeburg (a wood pulp and tar material that’s almost always in poor condition by now), clay tile, cast iron, ABS plastic, or PVC. That matters because it determines the repair approach.

How the Tech Diagnoses It

Good inspectors call out findings as they go, recording footage with timestamp and cable distance. When they’re done, they should give you a report with the problem locations noted in feet from the cleanout, the material condition rating, and ideally a copy of the video.

Some trucks carry a locating device called a sonde, a small battery-powered transmitter they push to a specific point inside the pipe. A handheld detector above ground picks up the signal and marks the exact location on the surface. That’s how they know where to dig if excavation is needed.

Ask for the video. You paid for the inspection. If a contractor won’t give you the footage, that’s a red flag.

When a Camera Inspection Makes Sense

Before buying a home, especially one built before 1980. A visual inspection from above doesn’t show you what’s in the ground. A sewer camera is cheap compared to a lateral replacement.

When you have slow drains or recurring clogs that clearing doesn’t fix. If a tech has snaked the line twice in a year and it keeps backing up, the snake is treating a symptom. The camera shows why.

After a major root clearance, to confirm the line is actually clear and see how much of the pipe wall is intact.

When selling. A clean camera report can head off negotiation issues.

If you smell sewage inside the house and can’t find the source. A belly or offset joint can trap organic material and off-gas through floor drains or cleanouts.

What You Can Check Yourself

Not much, honestly, and that’s fine. You can locate your cleanout (the white or black plastic cap, usually near the foundation or in the yard, sometimes inside in a basement). You can note which fixture backs up first (lowest fixtures back up first in a main line problem; one fixture only usually means a branch line issue). You can write down when symptoms started and whether anything changed, like new tree planting, heavy rain, or recent trenching nearby.

That information helps whoever runs the camera. Running the camera itself, diagnosing the footage, and doing anything that follows, those are licensed plumber jobs.

When to Call a Licensed Plumber

Slow drains that don’t clear, sewage odor in the house, wet spots in the yard over the sewer line, or multiple fixtures backing up at once: any of those is reason to call. A licensed plumber can run a camera and tell you exactly what you’re dealing with before anyone starts digging.

California plumbing contractors are licensed through the Contractors State License Board. Before hiring anyone, verify their license is current and in good standing at cslb.ca.gov. A camera inspection should be performed by a licensed contractor, not just a drain-cleaning service without a plumbing license. The findings have real consequences for what gets repaired and how.

Ask specifically for a sewer lateral inspection, not just a drain snake. Get the video. Get the written findings. Then you’ll know what you’re actually dealing with and can make an informed decision about repair.

How long does a sewer camera inspection take?
Most residential inspections take 30 to 60 minutes when there's an accessible cleanout. Longer lines, heavily blocked pipes, or cases where the tech has to remove a toilet to access the line can push that to two hours or more.
Can a sewer camera inspection miss problems?
Yes. If a section is fully blocked, the camera can't get past it. A belly holding standing water can obscure the bottom of the pipe. The camera also only shows the interior surface, not the soil condition around the pipe or the condition of the joints from the outside.
