Water pooling at the base of a Moen faucet usually means a worn O-ring on the faucet body. Water dripping from the handle area points more toward a failed cartridge. Neither problem fixes itself, and both get worse the longer you wait.
Why Water Shows Up at the Base
The body O-rings are the most common culprit. Moen single-handle faucets have rubber O-rings that seal the spout to the faucet body. Over time, the rubber dries out, cracks, or flattens. When that seal fails, water works its way down the outside of the spout body and collects on the counter or escapes under the sink deck.
You can sometimes feel the problem before you see it. If you grip the spout and it rotates more freely than it used to, the O-rings have lost their grip. A thin ring of mineral deposits around the base of the spout is another sign, because it shows water has been escaping there repeatedly and evaporating.
Fixing it means pulling the faucet apart, shutting off supply valves, removing the handle, and extracting the spout. If the cartridge comes out damaged in the process, the job gets bigger fast.
Why Water Drips From the Handle Area
A drip near or around the handle typically means the cartridge is worn. The cartridge is the internal valve that controls water flow and temperature. When its seals fail, water bypasses them and leaks out at the handle. Sometimes the leak is subtle, just a slow seep that shows up as mineral staining on the handle. Other times it’s a visible drip.

What a Plumber Checks
A licensed plumber doesn’t just look at where the water appears. They check the shutoff valves under the sink first (stuck or corroded shutoffs are their own problem), then remove the handle and cartridge to inspect the seals directly. They’re checking whether the O-rings are simply dried out or whether the cartridge body itself is cracked or the valve seat is scored.
Scored or pitted valve seats can’t be fixed by swapping a rubber washer. A scored seat means the water will just eat through a new washer quickly, and the plumber will either replace the entire faucet or, on older fixtures, re-cut the seat with a seat dresser tool.
They’ll also check the supply lines and connections at the same time. A leak at the base sometimes turns out to be a slow drip from a loose supply line connection rather than a failed O-ring.
Before You Call: Quick Checks
Look under the sink with a flashlight to confirm the water is actually coming from the faucet itself and not from a supply line connection or shutoff valve. That narrows down what the plumber is dealing with.
Also check whether the shutoff valves under the sink turn fully. If they’re stuck or corroded, mention that when you call, because it’s part of the job.
When to Call a Licensed Plumber
Faucet repair involves disassembly, proper tools, and working with water supply shutoffs. In hard-water areas, Moen cartridges often seize in the faucet body and need a specialized cartridge puller to extract without cracking the faucet body. Get it wrong and a small O-ring job turns into a cracked faucet and a flooded cabinet.
Call a licensed plumber if:
- The shutoff valves won’t close fully
- The valve seat looks damaged or pitted
- The faucet body is cracked or the leak source is unclear
- You want the repair done correctly the first time
