Water pooling at the base of a Delta single-handle faucet almost always means the O-rings around the body have worn out. It’s not a spout drip, it’s not a supply line problem, it’s a seal failure inside the faucet body itself, and it gets worse the longer you leave it.
Why the Base Leaks (and Why It’s Usually the O-Rings)
Delta single-handle faucets use rubber O-rings to seal the rotating cartridge or ball assembly against the faucet body. Over time those rings dry out, crack, or flatten from the constant friction of turning the handle. When they go, water finds a path down the outside of the body and collects at the base.
The two spots that cause a base leak on most Delta single-handle kitchen and bathroom faucets:
The body O-rings. These sit partway up the faucet stem, sealing the area where the cartridge meets the faucet body. When they fail, water wicks down and appears at the very bottom of the spout body, not at the spout tip.
The seat rings or springs (ball-style models). Older Delta ball faucets have rubber seats and small coil springs at the inlet ports. Worn seats primarily cause spout drips, but in some cases water can work its way down the body and appear at the base. If you have a ball-type faucet and water at the base, the body O-rings are still the more likely culprit.
Hard water accelerates both failure modes. Mineral scale abrades the rubber over repeated rotations. A faucet that gets used a lot, like a kitchen primary sink, will go through O-rings faster than a rarely-used powder room faucet.
Base Leak vs. Spout Drip: How to Tell the Difference
A spout drip keeps going after the handle is off, because the internal valve seat or cartridge is no longer holding back the water pressure. You’ll see water dripping from the tip of the spout itself.
A base leak behaves differently. Turn the handle on and watch where the water appears. If it’s welling up around the base of the spout body (not from the tip), and it’s worse when the water is running than when the faucet is off, that confirms a seal failure in the body, not the cartridge seat.
If you see water at the base only when the faucet is off and supply pressure is full, or you find the cabinet below is wet but can’t locate an obvious source above, check the supply line connections and the shutoff valve stems before assuming it’s the faucet body.
What the Repair Involves
Fixing a base leak means shutting off the supply valves, removing the handle and trim, pulling the cartridge or ball assembly, and inspecting the O-rings and the body surface they seat against. That surface matters: if it’s scored or pitted, a new O-ring won’t seal, and the job becomes a full faucet replacement rather than a simple part swap.
Ball-type models add another layer. The seats and springs at each inlet port may also need replacement, and getting the right parts requires knowing your Delta series, which isn’t always obvious until you’re looking at the cartridge directly.
There’s also the shutoff valve issue. If the supply valves under the sink are corroded or won’t close fully (common in older homes), any faucet work has to wait until those are dealt with first. Proceeding without a reliable shutoff turns a small repair into a flood risk.

What Happens If You Ignore It
The puddle at the base seems minor. It usually is, at first. The real damage comes from where that water goes after it leaves the faucet body.
Under a kitchen sink, water drips onto the bottom of the cabinet, soaks into particleboard, and starts the process of swelling, delaminating, and eventually rotting. Once the cabinet floor softens, it can compromise the mounting for the faucet itself, which turns a small O-ring job into a cabinet replacement and a faucet remount.
Mold can begin establishing in wet particleboard within 24 to 48 hours. You won’t see it immediately; it starts behind the cabinet liner. By the time you smell it or see discoloration, it’s usually more than a surface wipe-down fixes.
Slow, chronic leaks also set the stage for damage to the subfloor if the cabinet bottom gets saturated enough. That’s a significant repair that goes well beyond the plumbing itself.
A base leak that drips steadily can put out more water per day than most homeowners expect. Over a week that’s enough to do real damage.

This one’s worth a phone call rather than a YouTube rabbit hole. What looks like a quick O-ring swap can uncover a scored faucet body (full replacement), corroded shutoffs (those go first), or hidden mold. A licensed plumber sees all of that on one visit and handles it correctly.

The O-ring itself is a small part. The damage from waiting is not.
